Log out and log in to the user account. Run under the new user for a while. Do you experience the same issues? If not, the cause is in your current user account. You can narrow the trouble-shooting to your account and not the overall system or hardware. I've already repaired the Hard drive using the disc utilty. There are two repairs in Disk Utility. So if you are using Tiger, use the Tiger install disc. You can run Disk Utility from the Installer's Utilities menu.
You should run both repair routines. Since your issues seem to be related to Finder, try moving the Finder preference file to the Desktop so that the system creates a new one. For the Finder preferences file, you can just delete it. Be sure to try creating a new admin user account.
