The M4 has a proper mantlet insted of the M4A1's bolted on plate around the gun with a small verticle plate that moves with the gun. The M4 also has an Simply put, the M4 has far better turret protection. Div View Profile View Posts.

M4 versus M4A1 This is probably going to sound dumb but I am going to ask any way What is an M4 carbine as compared to other AR platforms?
What are the differences between the M4 and the M4A1? I hope someone will take the time to enlighten me. Thanks, ntxyankee. The gun was originally procured for Special Operations and as a possible replacement weapon for armored personnel issue.
How do you think that option came about? Naval Special Warfare M4 full auto selector carbines blowing up with the goverment profile barrel option. You know what an M16A3 is right? The Navy also ordered M4s set up the same way. Other Special Operations guys got a hold of them, then began to add iinput on what would make the weapons even better which brought about the SOCOM upgrade kit and this whole experiment brought about the M4 you are used to seeing today.
Historic water under the bridge my friends. Only the first production order of M4s had the fixed carry handle. The Navy Security Forces were still using them in Bahrain as late as They were marked Colt Model They are now using Colt Model M4s with A2 lowers. M4 semi and burst. M4A1 semi and auto the only differnce. Have a good week. Don't let people try and make it more diffuclt. It's not. Posted by erratic1; M4 semi and burst. The Navy for the longest time didn't buy M4s they bought Colt guns that were not exactly M4s.
Forget the fact the lights go out all over base everytime it rains around here and there are plenty of unlit areas on base. Hell they aren't even individually issued nor individually or properly zeroed. They just issue the next one on the rack at shift change. The MA community is a bit odd when it comes to weapons. The 2 battalions of them I deal with aren't even allowed to clean their weapons they are turned over to contractors to clean.
The MAs here have a rotating armorer who cleans all the weapons during their shift in the cage. I even gave a power point presentation their Division Training Officer three years ago that included all the NSNs for attachments and mounts and info for less expensive civilian methods of attaching lights.
Completely ignored but they did spend over a million surplus dollars on new gym equipment. Now if they would stop wearing them around their knees instead of their hips, they could actually run to an incdent instead of doing a fucked up airborne shuffle with their holster swinging wildly.
I convinced them to get 3 point slings as well. When I got here, half the weapons didn't have slings and they spent time at every shift change swapping slings. It's one thing not to have the latest tactical slings but what the hell happened to the slings that were issued with the weapons? They do carry their M9s loaded properly, M4's not so much.
They are not where they should be but they are better than they were a couple years ago. I even offered to teach an AUCC class as a volunteer. Presented my qualifications and certs but I guess they can't have their sailors trained by an exArmy qualfied CQB instructor.
