I used three cans of navy spray paint to paint two outdoor lounge cushions. I decide to paint the faded red cushions first to see how it went. The navy color was darker than the red. I wetted the fabric of the cushion with a wet washcloth. I think this helped the paint stick to the fabric.
I sprayed the fabric with two to three coats of paint and allowed it to dry between coats. The fabric really soaks up the paint. The first coat will look terrible, but it gets better with each coat. Try to get into where the piping is if your cushions have piping. You can also see what I filled the bottom of my large planter with here and how I dried and spray painted these gourds here.
I shopped Target. We had this outdoor furniture set that was in great shape aside from the cushions. The the cushions were faded and just discolored from years of being outside. Then, I thought about recovering them. Then it came to me. My first worry with painting the cushions was whether or not the fabric would get all stiff and uncomfortable against skin.
I had read about people using chalk paint or just regular old spray paint and this was always the one complaint. Well, I did a little investigating and found a solution!!
Turns out that Rustoleum makes a spray that is made specifically for outdoor fabric! Which would be perfect for my patio cushions. Here is what I used to spray paint our out door patio cushions…. I used Medium Gray, but they have a handful of choices and there were some great options. I will say it takes a few coats to cover the old color so I recommend choosing something somewhat similar to your existing cushion color.

Anyway, while we were focusing on a refresh of our outdoor area I noticed that this patio set had several areas that are starting to rust on it.
The cushions are a little worn but otherwise still in okay shape so spray paint to the rescue! I started off by scraping all the spots that I could find with a wire brush and a paint scraper. You want to know about the fabric paint. Be sure that your patio cushions are clean and ready for paint. This is probably the most important thing to make sure that the paint covers your cushions more evenly.
The easiest way to do this is just to scrub them down with some dish soap, hose them off and let them sit out in the sun to dry. In the progress picture you can see that one coat made a big difference. I added a second coat after these had dried and called it good. Upside, it dries to the touch in 30 minutes or less and it cleans up super easily. I could just wash it off my hands and nails. You should wear gloves when painting. According to the representatives, one can should cover around 5.
That would be the front and back side of a 20 X 20 pillow with around 3 coats. I used approximately 6 cans of fabric paint for our cushions.
Be prepared with a paper towel to clear off the front of the nozzle and shake your can often.
